Reflections from My Sabbatical

I Surrender: Reflections from My Sabbatical

For several days, I listened to the music of the dueling banjos in my mind.  One banjo played the song, “Buy the new laptop computer.  You know you want it.  You know you need it.”  The other banjo played the song, “You’ve said you needed a break.  Spend the money on the mini-sabbatical.” The songs were on constant rotation in my mind for several days and nights.

I decided that it was time to stop listening to the dueling banjos, and listen for guidance.  I chose to sit in meditation and listen.  After a few minutes of sacred silence, the only song I heard was, “Mini-sabbatical.  It is what your body, your spirit, your heart and you want and need.”

After the sacred silence, I called Sandy-Cove Ministry to inquire about availability for the September 11-13, Mini-Sabbatical for Ministers.  The receptionist said, “Yes, we have room.  Do you want to pay for that now?”  The universe was ready for me to say, “Yes!”

Sunday, September 11, 2011

The first day of the mini-sabbatical was also the 10th anniversary of “9-11,” the terrorist attack on the United States.  That morning, I posted a prayer on several social networking websites including Facebook.  The prayer was a call, “for a peace that reaches beyond that of the world, a call for the peace that resides deep in the hearts and souls of all, and a call for that peace to be an inspiration and guide for us today, and all days.”

When I posted on the Earth Son Spirit website, I came upon one of my recent posts, “thunderstorms during our August service, an earthquake (two days later), hurricane Irene, and then rains from hurricane Lee.”  A friend responded, “There’s a message in there somewhere.”

My fingers couldn’t type fast enough as I immediately wrote, “…thunderstorm, a call to being; earthquake, shaking up the foundation (earth) and institutions; hurricane Irene, the wind and water to cleanse; the rains of Lee, deeper cleansing…in preparation for the fire of creation.”  I did not fully understand what I wrote, but I knew clarity would come to me soon.

My intention for the mini-sabbatical was to receive spiritual guidance and inspiration, as well as to have a short break from my life.  For guidance and inspiration, I often perform a ritual of drawing a card from one or more oracle decks.  Today, I used the Path of Destiny oracle cards.  The ritual began with, “Mother ~ Father God, I am ready to receive guidance from you today.”  The card I selected, or the one that chose me, was the “creation” card, the first card of this deck.  The message of the “creation” card included, “you are a creator.  Now is the time to get clear about what you desire in your life.  The universal energies are working with you to bring your desires to fruition.”  My intention for this mini-sabbatical also was to receive clarity.

I arrived at the Sandy Point Christian Retreat Center early that evening.  After checking in and unpacking (which truthfully meant opening my bags and laying everything on one of the beds), I decided to familiarize myself with the retreat center facilities.  Sandy Cove’s located just south of North East, Maryland along the banks of the North East River.  I walked along the river to a picnic table at the northernmost point of the facilities. While sitting at the table, a male Mallard Duck joined me; he came as close as was comfortable for both of us.  Together we were mesmerized by the setting sun and its reflection on the river.  A stately tree stood witness as I quietly shifted into a state of “being on sabbatical, allowing myself to relax, and connecting to the essence of this place.”

As the sun gentled faded beneath the horizon, I decided to visit the chapel at the retreat center.  The visitor’s brochure stated that it was available 24 hours a day.  It was a small white chapel built in 1948, probably one of the original structures.  I walked into the open space of the sanctuary, heading towards one of the chairs at the front platform.

I sat down to be quiet and still.  I heard, “This is sacred ground.”  I immediately removed my shoes.  I was then guided to close my eyes, knowing it was for meditation and something more.

While in meditation, I was told to stand up, turn around and open my eyes.  I followed the instructions, turned and stood presence to presence with a huge white Eagle.  He was in the middle of the space, with wings spread wide.  I knew to extend my arms, emulating the Eagle’s spread wings.  The Eagle spoke, “You are me, I am you.”  He continued, “Spread your wings further.  Open your eyes; and now your third eye.  Open the eye I planted in your heart.  I gave you this eye so you can see the world through your heart.  From this day forth, keep it open.  Spirit Eagle.”

I noticed the voice of the Eagle sounded masculine.  I asked, “Why is your voice masculine?”

The Eagle replied in feminine voice, “The sound does not matter, the presence is the key.”  I rationalized that it’s voice was masculine to get my attention, which it did.

The last words I heard after the meditation and before leaving the chapel were, “We have much to write.”

Back in my room, I wrote about the day’s experiences.  The entire time I am writing, I kept hearing the lyrics, “I am calling you higher.  There is more that I require of thee.”  Do I know the song? “Yes.”

In that place between being awake and still asleep, I saw a praying mantis, an old friend, on the night stand.  I know the Creator communicates with us all of the time, and in many different ways.  Being a nature mystic, I often receive guidance and insights from the Universe through nature.  This morning the message through the praying mantis was, “to remember the power of stillness.”

I decided to take a stroll to the river before breakfast.  Last night we had a thunderstorm; however, this morning the waters were very calm.  I sat near the river to connect to its gentle flow.  I heard, “You are the ocean.  You are not the river.  You are the ocean.  You are deep and vast, and multi-layered.  Embrace you.  You are the ocean, you are not a river and yet you have many rivers flowing through you.  You must be the ocean, great, expansive, deep…you will see…get ready.”  I received the message, and went to breakfast.  Being open, quiet and still, and learning that I am the ocean, increased my appetite.

After breakfast, I thought a hike in the woods would be nice.  Elk Neck State Park and Elk Neck State Forest were nearby; however, I chose the State Park.  As I drove around looking for the park, I saw signs for the lighthouse, and made the lighthouse my new destination.  The journey to the lighthouse was a drive to the southern tip of the Elk Neck peninsula.  I parked, and then hiked about a mile along the trail through the woods, across an open field and into the woods again.

The trail led to Turkey Point.  From Turkey Point, I could see the waters converging to form the Chesapeake Bay.  I thought, “I am standing on the point where the light lets you know you are at the mouth of the bay; the guiding light at the beginning.”

Simply beautiful.

I walked around the lighthouse and surrounding area, breathing in the scenery.   A split tree stood about a hundred feet west of the lighthouse.  I call it a split tree because just as the trunk emerged from the ground it split into two trunks, like twin trunks.  The twin trunks tree, my new name for it, called out to me.  I walked over to the twin trunks tree and touched the right trunk.  There was a granddaddy long leg spider on the left trunk.  I smiled, knowing it was Grandfather; one of my spirit guides and companions.  The twin trunks tree now represented Grandfather and I; twin trunks.

I left the twin trunks tree to sit on one of the benches near the lighthouse.   Just as I reached the bench, a large dark bird flew overhead.  I thought, “Its wingspan is huge.  But it is not a heron; I don’t see the long legs.  It does not have the feather pattern of an osprey.  It was too large to be a crow; and its head was too large to be a vulture.  As I wrote this in my journal, I heard “Black Eagle.”  I just made a note.

Grandfather joined me and said, “Sometimes you have to travel back to the source, the beginning, the light, to find your way, your new way.  And when you get to the light, sit in the sacred silence, sit, be still and be.”

As I sat on the bench in the presence of the lighthouse, I listened: “In the stillness, even in the sacred silence, it is not quiet.  We are quiet in order to realize the channel through which information flows, guidance is given and love is shared.  It is not quiet within the silence.  However, you must be quiet to hear the joy and feel the beauty and sense the love.”

Grandfather turned to me and said, “My son, it is now time to not just be the light within the comforts of you.  It is time to be the light in the world, guiding them to their light.”

Walking back from the lighthouse, I stopped to talk with two birdwatchers.  Together, we saw several species of hawk.  I told the elder gentleman about the large dark feathered bird.  He remarked, “That sounds like a juvenile Bald Eagle.  We have many of those around here.  The juvenile Bald Eagle does not have the characteristic white head.”  I smiled; the elder just affirmed what I heard as I wrote in my journal.

As you drive into the Sandy Cove retreat facility, there is a sign that reads, “Hope you pause long enough to hear God.”  In that very moment, a dove flew across the road just a few feet in front of the car.  I heard, “Peace in the heart of the Divine Mother.”

For this mini-sabbatical, one of my intentions was to receive clarity of my ministry.  Our spiritual community, Visions of the Heart Spiritual Life Center, was expanding to having services every Sunday.  I wanted to be as clear as I needed to be, prior to the shift.  The theme for the mini-sabbatical was “I surrender.”  My prayer was not for Spirit to help me surrender; but, for Spirit to support me in embracing my ministry without reservations.

After lunch, I received the following clarity of my ministry, “Your ministry is to guide them to the light, to guide them to the Truth, to guide them to wholeness, to guide them to peace and to guide them to love, all of which resides in their hearts.  In the heart of the heart is an eye, by which we see God and by which God sees us.  When the eye is clear, pure, open…we realize our full connection to God.  Keep the eye of your heart clear, pure and open.”  I was reminded of a quote from Black Elk, an Oglala Lakota Holy Man, about the eye in the heart is where God connects to us, and where we connect to God.

There were still a few hours before dinner.  I decided to sit beneath a tree overlooking the river, and beat my hoop drum.  Beating the drum was a way of cleansing and preparing for meditation, as well as a tool for guidance into meditation.  I sensed Grandfather would join me beneath the tree for this drumming meditation.

I asked Grandfather, “Is there more you wish to share or that Spirit wishes to share through you?  Is there more I am to receive?”

Grandfather looked out over the river.   We watched the people enjoy parasailing and sail boating.  We were soothed by the gentle waves across the water, and caressed from the gentle September afternoon breeze.

I realized that in this moment and all throughout the mini-sabbatical, I heard Grandfather through my right ear.  I heard Spirit through my left ear.

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths, but by the moments that take your breath away.”  I remembered the quotation.  This moment was one of those moments; sitting beneath the tree by the river beating my drum with Grandfather, hearing the beating wings of Canadian Geese flying over and listening to Spirit.  In my left hear I heard, “Peace. Enjoy.”  In my right ear, I heard Grandfather breathe a breath of contentment or a breath of agreement.

I thought, “Life. Beauty. A happy moment.  The essence of living is having a happy moment.”  Grandfather sighed in agreement again.

Either Spirit or Grandfather or maybe both said, “You now have clarity of your ministry.  Lead them, guide them to light, truth, love, peace and all that is good.  And that resides and waits in their hearts.  It is where they will find God and Spirit.  It is the gateway to the universe and all things divine.”

“Your color is blue,” the guidance continued.  “It [their heart] is where they will rediscover themselves. You know this, now be it BlackEagle.  Build the church and let the church build you; one heart at a time.”

Grandfather remarked, “You do not seem overwhelmed by this.”

I replied, “No, not in this moment.  It is, and I am.”

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

I was awakened by a knock or two on the door, hard knocks.  I looked at the clock and it read, 4:19.  I got up and turned on all the lights.  Finally realizing that nobody knocked on the door, I concluded that the Universe was calling.  I acknowledged the call, responded “Yes,” and went back to bed.

During breakfast and while talking with others at my table, I heard in a gentle whisper, “the Gospel of John.”  I knew it was in reference to the knock at the door and the time on the clock. I would read it later.

After breakfast, I was ready to leave.  It was time.  I passed the sign on the retreat facility road leading to the highway.  It read, “Hope you paused long enough to hear God.”

I smiled, “Yes, I heard God. From the time I arrived until now, Spirit spoke and I listened.  It was one long, continuous conversation; and a blessing.”

Conversations with the Elders ~ What Do You Truly Want

Conversations with the Elders

What Do You Truly Want
October 31, 2011

“Every client will bring your issue to the coaching session.”  I still hear those words echoing in my head.  One of my Spiritual Life Coaching teachers shared this to the class.  I did not believe it, at first.  There are times where I simply choose to forget it.  “They are a mirror of you,” the echo continued.

Now that particular pill gets easier to swallow with time.  However, the larger pill is when there are several conversations with client or friend that bring forth the same issue.  And the conversations span over a short span of time.  That is when it is time to stop, sit and listen.  In recent weeks, I have had three maybe five conversations, where they all culminated to one question, “what do you want in life, out of life, with your life…what do you want?”  Each conversation was a conversation with my mirror, with myself.

There are two specific visions that clearly come to mind when I ask myself or am asked, “What is the vision for your life?”   In the first vision, I am standing on top of a large sand dune with a lynx.  The lynx guides me down into the valley, where many people are apparently building something.  As we get closer, I realize that they are not building, but rather unearthing buildings, or possibly a village.  Their work gives rise to a spiritual community.  The lynx confirms, silently.

The second vision shows me walking through two very large, ornate doors into a sanctuary.  I am guided to the pulpit.  As I stand facing out into the sanctuary, there are several objects on the pulpit.  To my left, there is a vessel of water.  Directly in front of me are several sacred texts, all in one stack; the Holy Bible is on top and the Book of Heart is on the bottom.  The Book of Heart supports all of the others.  And to my right are two drums; one is a Native American style hoop drum, and the other is an African djembe.  I see both of visions vividly, and hold both in my heart.

Both bring a smile to my face (most of the time) and a smile to my heart.  I do enjoy doing and bringing those visions into being.  However, I realize that I am not happy, nor am I unhappy.  From this, I ask the question, “Can someone enjoy doing, becoming and being who they are in the world and still not be completely happy?  Is this possible?”  When I wrote this question in my journal, I heard the Elders say, “You are not asking for what you want.”

I know it is time to delve into the energy of this situation; get to the heart of the matter.  It is time to sit down, intently, in sacred silence, to receive guidance and healing as I move through this.  I choose to sit in sacred silence in the presence of the Elders.

Tonight, I journey to the Elders cabin.  I arrive and immediately sense the energy emanating from the cabin.  I always feel welcome; however, this evening my spidey-senses are ringing the words, “warmth, comforting, and sacredness.”  They have created a sacred space, a ceremonial space for me to receive guidance, clarity, support and whatever I need.  I am grateful to the Elders of being there, being here for me.

I walk into the cabin, and am greeted by the Elder of Water, the Elder of Earth, Grandfather, the Elder of Fire, my Teacher, and the Elder of Air.  They are standing around the fireplace.  I notice the couches have been removed, and replaced with large pillows.  “Just for this evening,” the Elder of Fire responds to my observation.

There are seven pillows on the floor.  Six of them are placed in a semicircle in front of the fireplace.  There is one pillow in the middle, and is close to the fire.  I know it is for me.

The Elder of Fire guides me to my pillow.  I remove my shoes, inter the circle and sit on the pillow.  The Elders and others join me on the other pillows.  The Elders and the others begin humming very quietly; it is sacred music for the occasion.  The ceremony begins.

I gaze into the fire watching, listening, sensing, feeling…and being.  The fire dances and sings.  I continue watching and listening, sensing and feeling, and breathing.  Although I do not know what is about to happen, I wait for what is going to happen.  And it does.  As I watch, listen, sense and feel I begin to drift away from my pillow, towards the fire and into the fire.  The fire is a gateway into another realm.

In this realm, all I see is light, all I feel is a tingle, and all I hear is silence.  Although I do not know what is about to happen, I wait for what is going to happen.  And it does.  I hear, yet not with my ears, “What do you want?  You seem to want something.  Do you know what it is?”

I reply without hesitation, “I want the tea from heaven that will quench my thirst.  I have tried the other teas, and still I thirst.  Some taste sweet, others are bitter; yet, none have quenched my thirst.  There must be a tea from heaven that will refresh and bring comfort to the dry taste of yearning in my mouth.  I know this is not specific; yet, it is what I want.  It is the sweet nectar that my heart knows exists.  It is not a specific thing that comes from the earth plane, but its essence brings a smile to the deepest and far reaches of my heart.”  I stop and breathe deeply.

I open my mouth and blurted, “I want to feel welcomed in my own heart.”  As the words flowed out, a wave of energy flowed through me.  I wonder,  “What did I mean by that?”  Even if my mind does not fully understand, my body and spirit seem to know.  Then I feel two arms reach out to me, draw me inward and hug me.  It’s like when grandmother hugs you.  Although you don’t quiet know what is happening in your life; grandmother’s hug brings assurance, peace, comfort or whatever the soul needs in that moment.

In that moment, all of the many answers to the question of what do I want merge into the one answer:  I want to feel welcomed in my own heart.  I hear my mind still trying to make sense of those words.  And I know my heart knows.  The heart knows.

Again I hear, yet not with my ears, “The words spoken will guide you.  The heart knows, it always knows.  Let peace be your companion.  Let love be your nourishment.  Let light be your guide.  And know that I am that peace, love and light.  And remember, the heart knows.”

Returning back to sitting on the pillow in front of the fire, I continue watching, listening, feeling and sensing.  I feel hands on my back.  They are the hands of the Elders and the others.  They are hands of support, hands of comfort, hands of assurance, and hands of love.  Warm tears gentle flow down my face.

The Elder of Water breaks the silence, “Let peace by your companion.  Let love be your nourishment.  Let light be your guide.”   More tears start flowing down my face.  The only thing for me to do is sit in the experience, and be with the experience.

I sit in sacred silence in the presence of the Elder of Water, the Elder of Fire, the Elder of Earth, the Elder of Air, Grandfather and my Teacher as I feel the words, “I want to feel welcomed in my own heart.”

The Gift

The Gift

While in meditation this morning, I heard, “Write the story of the gift.”  This was the guidance I received for the day.  So, I wrote the story.

Sunday morning.  Our spiritual life center offers services every Sunday, now.  This morning, I was preparing for service.  My preparation consisted of thinking about the sermon or sacred message and making sure I had what was needed for the altar.  Also, I questioned if I had enough bulletins and newsletters, and wondered if folks were coming today.  Even though I was not giving the sermon today, as the senior minister the program is still my responsibility.  Feeling the pressure, hearing the mental chatter and beginning to mimic the antics of a jabbering fool, I decided I needed to go for a walk.

I left the house and walked one block down the street to the nature center.  To prepare my legs for walking, I stretched my legs, the hamstrings and the quadriceps muscles.  Several weeks ago, my massage therapist said my left quad and right hamstring muscles were tight.  Or maybe he said my right quad and my left hamstring muscles were tight.  Or was it… Oh, no, the mental chatter and jabbering came with me.  It was time to walk.

I walked along the trail behind the county pool that was closed for the season.  I thought that walking would quiet the mental chatter, but it did not.  I was having a conversation with Spirit about everything “the church, the spiritual community, the book, the school, the students, the need for a coach/mentor/therapist, and the pressures of being what I understood Spirit wants me to be.”  As I continued the mental chatter while walking, I came upon money on the trail.  There was a rolled up dollar bill right in the middle of my path.  I reached down, picked it up, placed it in my pocket and kept walking.

Now my mental chatter switched to questions of “where did the money come from, who lost it, and what was the meaning of finding i?”  But I could not here any reply because of the jabbering.  I kept walking.

In between the runaway train of thoughts, I noticed the birds and squirrels, people walking their dogs and two guys practicing capoeira on the tennis courts. By then, I had completed my first lap.

Somewhere during the second lap, either I realized that there was no point in the mental chattering or my left brain exhausted itself.  For whatever the reason, I was quiet.

Then the thought of finding the dollar bill on the path floated back into my mind.  I sensed that it was a gift.  I said thank you, just in case I didn’t say it earlier.  As I took the next step, I heard a voice that was neither masculine nor feminine; neither loud nor soft; and neither forceful nor gentle.  The voice was like, well, a presence.

The essence of what I heard was, “I gave you a gift.  I gave you your gift.  I gave you the gift of you.  Give the gift of you to the world.  Be the best you in every moment.  This is all I ask of you.”

When the presence was complete, I felt a wave of energy, light, love, or something flow through my body.  Hearing truth has that effect on me.  After the energy surge, I felt at peace.

I continued walking.

On the third lap, I received a penny.  My gift total was now at $1.01.  I completed my third lap and headed home.  My walk was complete, but not my gift total.  Later that morning on my way to purchase ceremonial white roses, I received a dime.  This brought by gift total to $1.11.  I resisted the urge to derive any meaning, and just acknowledged the gift with a “thank you.”

Today, I learned, or was reminded that, it is not for me to be perfect, but to be the best me in the moment.  And that in itself is perfect.

I cannot wait for my next walk.

Conversations with the Elders ~ Many Flavors of Love

Many Flavors of Love
October 3, 2011

Today, while reflecting over the events of the weekend, I received the call to come to the Elders’ cabin.

I journeyed to the Elders’ cabin.  As I walk down the road, I look towards the cabin.  The Elder of Water is standing on the front porch.  She waves at me, and I reply with a wave and a smile.  I am always happy to be with the Elders at their cabin, whether I know the reason why or not.  Today, I know not.

I reach the front porch, where the Elder of Water greets me with open arms.  I step into her welcoming arms, and I am embraced.  I smile across my face and across my heart.  My heart knows when it is home.

As we release our embrace, the Elder of Water says, “Good to see you, young-old man.  Welcome.  Come in.  We have a surprise for you.”

I smile; yet, behind my smile I am thinking, “Oh-oh, what kind of surprise?”

The Elder of Water laughs.  I know she heard me thinking.

She walks into the cabin, and I follow.  As soon as I cross the threshold, I look for someone or anything that could be the “surprise.”  I am still learning to be open to the blessings of the Elders without reservation or suspect.  I admit it is not a hard lesson, just a long lesson to learn.

I notice nothing different, nothing out of the ordinary or sense someone hiding in the closet, as I follow the Elder of Water.  The Elder of Water joins the other Elders at the table.  They motion for me to join them, and I sit in my chair.  I finally see one thing that is different.  There is a single white tall thin candle, lit, in the center of the table.  It’s flame is fiery yellow and orange.

The Elders have candles burning all the time, and sometimes the fireplace burning.  However, this candle is unique, not in size or shape or color or the color of the flame.  It is unique in the energy that radiates from the candle.  I sense, no I know, the surprise will come from the experience with the candle.

The Elders are joining hands, forming a ceremonial circle.  The Elder of Water, sitting to my left, offers her open hand to me.  The Elder of Fire, sitting to my right, offers her open hand to me.  I join my hands with theirs completing the circle.

I am drawn to the candle, in particular the flame.  I gaze into the fire, and sense a presence, radiant and brilliant.  I sense the radiant, brilliant presence outside the fire, and around the candle.  I feel it flowing through my body, entering one hand from the Elder of Fire and flowing out to the Elder of Water.  I sense it through out the room and the cabin, a gentle and yet intense presence.

Again, I feel it in my body, in my chest, in my center.  I feel it dancing to the beat of my heartbeat.  It flows through my heart and around my heart.  Then, I hear the words “divine presence,” and I smile.

I look at the flame on the candle again.  I realize that it is beating to the rhythm of my heartbeat.  I feel my heart beating to the rhythm of the flame.  The rhythms are connected; the rhythms are one.  I notice that the Elders and I are swaying to the rhythm of the presence. Each of us are swaying, all of us are swaying together as one.

I look into the eyes of the Elder of Earth.  I see a tear rolling down his face.  And I realize a tear flows from my eye as well.  We smile together.  Sometimes sharing an experience of love needs no words.

We continue swaying together for hours or maybe just minutes.  It really doesn’t matter.  In ceremony, everything is for the richness of the experience.

The Elder of Fire and the Elder of Water gentle squeeze my hand.  This signals the completion of the ceremony.  However, I received another signal that we are complete. My stomach is growling.  The ceremony is finished; it is now time for the post-ceremonial feast.

The Elder of Air looks at me, “What did you prepare for us?”

I look back at the Elder of Air, and with open arms and a smirk I say, “Surprise, I have no-thing.”

We all laughed.  The Elder of Fire, carrying dishes of food from the kitchen, responds, “It this best dish you could have prepared.”

The Elders continue laughing at her comment.  I laugh in anticipation of her tasting her wonderful foods.  I smile again for a different reason, or maybe not.  Love shows itself in many ways.
